Many high school athletes participate in team sports. However, there are many individual sports that high school athletes can participate in as well. Some of the sports that are performed individually include tennis, track and field, cross country, swimming, golf, and wrestling.
Many of these sports are technically a “team” sport, being that the individual scores are added up for a team total. In reality, however, these sports are performed individually. Most athletes will be working towards improving on individual scores and improving upon these scores is a “win” in their eyes.
When participating in these sports, individuals must train hard to improve upon their own scores. It is important to set goals and work to achieve them. Once that goal has been achieved, a new goal must be set. Doing your individual best is important not only for your own goals but for the overall team scores as well. Individual sports can be even more challenging than team sports in that you are not only competing against others, you are also competing against your own best scores in an effort to constantly improve yourself.
Studies have shown that there is a direct correlation between students who perform well in sports and these same students performing well in academics. There is a belief that this is due to an increase in brain function, better nutrition, more energy, and better concentration levels. There is further belief that students who participate in sports have an increased self-esteem and therefore better behavior, which in turn leads to better learning skills and a better learning environment.
Therefore, it is widely agreed upon that individual and team sports are an important part of the high school experience. These activities lead to well-rounded, healthier individuals.
